Tim Michael Sawyier, from Chicago, Illinois, is a recent
graduate of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools.
He is in his second year as principal oboe of the Chicago
Youth Symphony and Encore Chamber Orchestras. Tim's
most notable honors include winning the 2002 Union League Foundation
Competition in Winds, taking 2nd place at the Music Teachers' National
Association National Wind Finals, and twice winning his division in the
Midwest Young Artists Concerto Competition. As a chamber musician, he
has won the Rembrandt Chamber Players Competition, been a Fischoff semi-finalist,
and performed on "From the Top." He has also appeared as a soloist
on Chicago's Classical Fine Arts Station, WFMT and on CBS News as a part
of the VH1 "Save the Music" Project. Tim spent last summer at
the Aspen Music Festival where he studied with Richard Woodhams, Elaine
Douvas, and John Mack; he attended the Tanglewood Institute in the summer
of 2002. He also enjoys reading, rollerblading and tennis. Tim is spending
the summer of 2004 as an Oboe Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and will
begin studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in the fall.
